Men's 3s give 2s' promotion bid a boost

Rob Ledger

Who’d have thought the 3s would roll over Gloucester City A? Well, that’s what happened today, 3-2 at home, a fantastic result made all the more astonishing when put next to the 8-1 reversal suffered in the first half of the season. The icing on the cake was that Gloucester were the main rivals to the 2s for the second promotion spot.

We started much the brighter of the two teams and deservedly took the lead when Curt played in Winge who took the ball out to the right and slotted home. The lead doubled from a short corner when the ball was slipped to Luke who hit it on the half volley. The ball was still rising as it hit the top of the net and would surely have reached the ring road were it not for the net. We still created chances but Gloucester pulled one back before half-time when we failed to clear our lines. The second half was a different affair as Gloucester pushed people forward and transferred the ball well, more like the team we played before Christmas. Duncan was much busier than in the first half but was up to the task. He was finally beaten for the equaliser when a shot ricocheted between his pads and fell invitingly for the striker on the post. Despite the pressure we still worked the ball well to the forwards and with a few minutes to go Dan P – welcome back to B&W – pounced on a loose ball and sent Curtis racing through. The keeper made a hash of clearing the ball and hit it into Curt’s stick, falling a few yards from the line for Curt to roll in the winner. A really gutsy performance against a quality team. Many players were nominated for man-of-the-match but for an all-round excellent display in midfield, topped off with a ripsnorter of a goal, it could only be Luke.
