Wow! What a weekend for Bristol & West Hockey Club! A full roster of ten games with five wins and a draw on the board.
Our women's 1st team clinched the league title last week, but had the opportunity to round out an astonishing unbeaten season with a potentially tricky fixture away at Westberries. A full squad of 16 knew they needed to win to earn their champagne 🍾 celebrations at the end of the game. The girls battled through a nervy and goalless first half before unleashing in the 2nd period (a trademark this season), tucking away 4 goals without reply. Cue popping corks and well deserved celebrations continuing into the early hours of Sunday!
On our home turf of Mangotsfield, our lads knew they had a season-defining game as an onlooking crowd "welcomed" University of Bristol. The two teams locked in a stalemate at the top of the league since Christmas, with 3 games to play, jostling for top spot only on goal difference . UoB were predictably fast out of the blocks, but it was Bristol & West who drew first blood via the unlikely source of our diminutive defender Dan "Stumpy" George. With the swelling Mangotsfield supporters behind us, the students had no answer. An increasingly feisty game, punctuated with cards on both sides (Chipper ... 🟨🙈!!!) saw us post another 3 goals without reply. A third clean sheet in a row, a win against this season's fiercest rivals, unbeaten record intact and two games to go to claim the biggest prize..... watch this space!
Other wins this week came from our men's 2s, who took a slimmed down squad on the long trip to Neath. Having become accustomed to come-back 2-2 draws, the lads found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being 3-0 up at halftime! We kept the second half interesting, shipping 4 goals but still coming away with a 6-4 win! Our women's 2s outplayed their opponent, with 5 goals and a 10th clean sheet of the season to secure 3rd in their league. Not to be outdone by our ladies 3s, who put 7 past Bluebirds in their final game to also finish 3rd.

Bare 11 outfield players faced Bristol Bluebirds at home on Saturday without a keeper. Awesome hockey played by all as we took the opposition apart in a 7-2 victory. Great way to finish the season in 3rd place in the league 😊.
